The following document provides valuable historical and architectural background for all the historic districts and resources in Greater Elizabeth City. However, only the first two districts (The Elizabeth City Historic District and the Elizabeth City Historic District Boundary Expansion) are covered in detail on this site. Other districts may be added to the site in the future, if there is sufficient interest.

The material in this Context and Criteria section of the site was compiled by noted Architectural Historian, Thomas Russell Butchko.

The Context and Criteria material, as presented here, can be followed in "book" sequence by pressing the "Next Page" link when you've finished reading each page. If you want to browse, the following Table of Contents explodes down to individual sections.

One final note to students - as long as you provide proper citation information, giving due credit to the National Register and Mr. Butchko, this material is suitable as a reference for your term papers. However - don't even think about copying any of the material and handing it in under your name. Your teachers have probably already read the material and will know where it came from.
